Dr. Barrett:

Well, good morning. Happy Monday. It's a new week, and I feel like it's always good to have an intention for the week. Today, I wanna talk about how healthy things grow. It's a common saying that we use in our home, at work.

Dr. Barrett:

Healthy things grow. If you're healthy, we should expect you to grow. But what I find is after working with patients for fifteen years, is that more often than not, they want to create a 100% change in a day. Yet what we find is that 1% is greater than 100%. I know that doesn't make sense mathematically, but when we look at the consistency of someone's life, I would take someone who makes small incremental changes over the course of three sixty five days, then someone who creates 100% shift in their nutrition or workout routine or other lifestyle.

Dr. Barrett:

Yet, we find that within thirty days, it's not sustainable. It's not continued, and inevitably it results in failure. Motivation is fleeting. You don't wake up every day motivated to train. You don't wake up every day motivated to eat clean.

Dr. Barrett:

It's what you've done consistently over the course of a year or ten years that creates the habit. And discipline will always be far greater than motivation. Where motivation ends, discipline begins. It's easy to get motivated about doing something dramatic and drastic because you're overweight, or because you know you need to make a health change. The problem is when that motivation is gone, and we haven't established any rhythm of discipline, we find that habit to be fleeting, and inevitably results in failure.

Dr. Barrett:

There's a great book called Atomic Habits. And the idea is, if we can create a 1% shift or change every day, and be intentional about just a 1% change. Over the course of three hundred and sixty five days, we have a 36.5% change in total. We grew 37% that year. How do we apply this practically?

Dr. Barrett:

I know you wanna train at the gym five days a week, but if you're not training right now, to think that you're gonna train five days a week, an hour each day, is just not practical. And not to sell you short, but it's probably not gonna happen beyond January, February, and now getting into March. So what do we do? Well, here's what we advise our patients. Walk for ten minutes a day.

Dr. Barrett:

Do that every day for thirty days. If you check that box, you've created enough rhythm and discipline that now we can go to fifteen minutes. We can go to twenty minutes. Hey. You wanna pray for an hour a day and be a prayer warrior.

Dr. Barrett:

That's great. I love the heart. But if you haven't been praying for five minutes, don't expect to pray for sixty. Pray for seven. Read God's word a chapter a day.

Dr. Barrett:

Just a chapter a day. But I wanna read the whole Bible in a year. Well, everyone does, but few do. And what's the great separator? It's the one that read a chapter a day every day that then next year read two chapters a day every day, and then the next year read three chapters a day every day.

Dr. Barrett:

It's the great separator, discipline. 1% is greater than 100%. 1% change daily consistently, creating a discipline and a rhythm is greater than a 100% change in a day that doesn't ever continue into a discipline. Healthy things grow. You are called to grow.

Dr. Barrett:

You are healthy when you create consistent change over time. So today, look at your life, look at the disciplines of your life, and decide- move- what areas of your life do you wanna just move 1% today? And start that journey and be grateful for the 1%. Be grateful for that needle moving just 1% in your life. Thanks for tuning in to today's message.
