Let's roll. We should talk politics today. Welcome back to another episode of The Real Health Podcast. Excited that you are jumping in.
Dr. B:We were just talking about how we should talk about presidential election today on the episode and who we're voting for. Kidding. That's not gonna happen. But we are gonna talk about the weird and crazy questions you guys ask me all the time in the office or through social media, so today is ask Dr. B anything, the top ten questions asked over the last couple weeks.
Dr. B:So there's 10 questions that we're gonna run through and it's gonna add a lot of value to you. It's gonna be rapid fire, but these are very common questions being asked right now so I think it pertains to a large large audience. Alright let's dive in.
Dr. B:Without further ado, I am voting for... kidding again.
Dr. B:"Hey, what form of magnesium Dr. Barrett should I use?" It's a great question. There are a lot of different forms of magnesium, so it depends on the purpose. If you would like to, just kind of do general health with magnesium, magnesium glycinate is the best form. If you would like to improve brain function and sleep and rest and recovery, magnesium theanate, the one that goes across the blood brain barrier, is gonna be your best form.
Dr. B:If you want to help with like gastrointestinal health, magnesium oxide is gonna be more of a laxative. So those are the the main three. You have other forms of magnesium, but if we're talking about the main three areas, gut, body, brain, those would be the 3 types. And then another great form of magnesium is magnesium sulfate so epsom salts. Epsom salts are fantastic- is a fantastic way of getting your magnesium in the body. And most people are depleted so most people can supplement with magnesium. So that's the forms of magnesium that you should be looking towards.
Dr. B:What's the best way to support my immune system in this season? So one of the best ways to support immune health right now is decrease slash eliminate sugar and alcohol, get 8 hours sleep a night, get adjusted, and then from a supplementation standpoint, I am a massive fan of mushroom extracts, specifically what we call beta glucans. There's a company called 5 defenders and they have a broad based mushroom support product that has, as it as the name implies, 5 different types of mushrooms that provide beta 13 glucans, which is an extract from mushrooms that are very supportive to immune health.
Dr. B:They don't overstimulate the immune system, they act as an immune modulator, and they're very very helpful in the season because you can take them every single day and even kids can take them. So 5 defenders, their immune support product is my favorite, it's my go to.
Dr. B:What's the best way to support my kids' immune system in this season? So the best way to support your kids' immune system is the same thing we just talked about. Right? We talked about getting good quality sleep, eliminating sugar, especially, you know, Halloween candy. And then there's a great product called Immunaberry. Immunaberry from Designs For Health is an elderberry, it's got a couple mushroom extracts in it, it has astragalus in it, it's devoid of echinacea which is a really strong herb, not great for kids to be taking on a regular basis. And then it also has those beta 13 glucans that we just that we just talked about. So immuno berry from Designs For Health is fantastic.
Dr. B:Do I need to eat organ meat if I eat a lot of red meat or muscle meat or like animal protein? Is organ meat necessary? So here's the deal when it comes to muscle protein versus organ, organ meat. So when you consume chicken, beef, right steak, fish, it's high in a specific amino acid called methionine. If methionine is too high relative to another amino acid called glycine, then it raises an inflammatory cardiovascular marker called homocysteine. Now you might have heard of homocysteine before because it's something that we test in the office, we look at in blood work.
Dr. B:When your homocysteine levels are high, this is an inflammatory marker in the cardiovascular system indicating poor methylation status. So, methionine, high levels of methionine can increase, actually do increase homocysteine levels. And when homocysteine levels are high, it is a risk for disease. So how do we balance that out? We balance it out with glycine.
Dr. B:Glycine, about 0.5 grams to 1 gram of glycine per day per, one gram of methionine keeps you in balance. So when we look at how much- how many milligrams or grams of methionine you're consuming, you have to consume pretty much the equal amount of glycine. The problem is you're not gonna find this imbalance in a steak or chicken or fish. You will only find this imbalance in organ meats. Organ meats, classically, have a lot of glycine.
Dr. B:Also, collagen has a lot of glycine. So if you look at the amino acid profile, you'll see glycine being really high which is great. Glycine is a calmer to the body. It is a natural relaxation supportive product because it supports a hormone in the brain called or neurotransmitter in the brain called GABA. So it acts on the GABA system.
Dr. B:So glycine needs to be balanced with your methionine levels. In essence, the answer to the question is yes. You absolutely need to be consuming organ meats or you need to be consuming a lot of collagen and organ meats to support your glycine levels to balance out your methylene levels. Especially if you're consuming a 150, 200 grams of protein a day, this- you need to you need to supplement, either through, you know, organ capsules or eating liver or consuming collagen peptides. This is very important to balance out your methionine levels, to keep your homocysteine levels low. So that's the story on methionine glycine. "If I consume colloidal silver, so I've heard about colloidal silver. If I consume colloidal silver, Dr. Barrett, will I turn blue?" Okay. This is called blue man syndrome and this will not happen.
Dr. B:Now if you went home and made your own colloidal silver and drank a gallon of it, you would yes, it would discolor your skin, you'd turn blue or grayish color. But that's not what you're doing. You're using a hyper clean source of colloidal silver. My one of my favorite companies is Results RNA and they have a great, colloidal silver. It's very potent, you only need a few sprays and colloidal silver is a very strong antiviral, antibacterial and it's great for immune health. But yeah, you don't have to worry about you, about turning blue on just a couple sprays a day.
Dr. B:My husband snores. What do I do to help? Okay. So if your husband snores, there's definitely a couple things that you should look at.
Dr. B:The first thing is mouth tape. Mouth taping is very effective at preventing snoring and actually helping with sleep apnea, okay? Now whenever you mouth tape, I also recommend doing what's called- like a nasal strip that opens up your nasal pathways. So I use a nasal strip called an intake breathing. Intake breathing is what I usually get on Amazon and it opens up my air passage and helps support my nasal breathing because I do have a broken nose so I don't breathe great through my nose and a deviated septum.
Dr. B:So when I do mouth tape and use the nasal strip, it really is amazing at looking at my sleep and my oxygenation levels and my wife doesn't kick me in the middle of the night. It's amazing. I can actually sleep, she can sleep, it's a win win. So mouth tape and intake breathing nasal strips is what we use.
Dr. B:"Should I start running?" Someone asked me the other day, "should I start running? Like is running good for me?" So here's here's what running is great for. If you can run, you should run. And the reason why is as kids we're running, we're sprinting, we're jumping, we lose that.
Dr. B:And if you wanna know where imbalances are in your body, running is a great way to find those imbalances. When you start running, things will start hurting like your calf will hurt, your hip will hurt, your left hip flexor, your, you know, your right calf. What does that tell you? It tells you you're imbalanced, it tells you you have motor pattern dysfunctions, it tells you you need to mobilize and stretch and strengthen properly. So running really just kind of exposes the body especially when you start getting into some intensity and start to sprint a little bit.
Dr. B:Those sprint efforts or high volume running is a great way to explore your body and figure out where are you tight, where are you dysfunctional, what's going on in the body. Now, I would suggest a running coach. I would suggest getting someone to help you in that journey, okay? So you're not you're not trying to figure things out on your own or personal trainer, but I think running is fantastic and should everyone who can run should run.
Dr. B:"How do we help- Hey, Dr. Barrett. How to help- how do we help ear infections? So what do we do to prevent ear infections?" Okay. So here here's what we do to prevent ear infections. Ready?
Dr. B:You get your kids off dairy and you get your kids adjusted. 1, the first part is when kids are under chiropractic care, it's very rare they're gonna get an ear infection. Maybe time to time we'll see it and it's usually associated because they've dropped off their visits, their wellness visits, they they haven't been in a couple weeks and their body's not draining properly and then they get sick. But also too dairy. Dairy is very inflammatory to the mucosal membranes. So across the board, if you were to eliminate dairy, get your kids adjusted, I mean ear infections, I would be I would be surprised if you did those two things and your child still hadn't or developed an ear infection, okay?
Dr. B:"Should I do a juice cleanse? Dr. B, it's like fall season, winter season, I was thinking about doing a juice cleanse." Here's what you shouldn't do: a juice cleanse. Why? Because you're just consuming a bunch of sugar and, when you consume a high amount of raw plants like kale for instance, it does have a ton of uric acid in it and it does have oxalates in it. This can cause kidney stones. Juicing kale can cause kidney stones excessively so I'm not a big fan of juice cleanses. I actually don't suggest at all. What should you do instead? Bone broth cleanse. If you were to if you were to choose a liquid type fast, look at doing a bone broth cleanse.
Dr. B:And the last question is why does my urine burn? If I don't have a- if I don't have a urinary tract infection, why do I have pain upon urination?
Dr. B:Kids, adults, all the like, if you have pain upon urination and there's no UTI, urinary tract infection, no bacterial component to it, there's no kidney stone, what you have to look at is you have these tiny scrap metal like particles running through your urinary system And these these are something called oxalates. Oxalates. Oxalic acid is, when you- when you have accumulated oxalates in your kidneys and in your bladder, it will burn upon urination as they build up in size. Okay? You don't see them.
Dr. B:But where do you get them from? You get them from spinach? You get it from kale? So you have to look at your diet. Am I consuming a lot of almonds?
Dr. B:Am I consuming a lot of kale? Consuming a lot of spinach? And if you are that might be the reason why you are, why you have pain upon urination.
Dr. B:Top ten questions of the week, easy, quick, delivered to you. Hey, have a great weekend. Thanks so much for listening to another episode of the Real Health Podcast.
